STARTUP .3BADW 2023/CourageEN/SK
The situation surrounding the term 'start-up' is currently quite confusing. In many projects, invention is confused with mere attraction, and societal contribution is minimized in favor of economic profit. For a designer, the challenge lies in redefining its essence—not only by seeking new approaches and innovative solutions but also within the context of current discussions on the designer's role in society and the responsible approach to the solutions they bring.
The current presentation at Bratislava Design Week 2023 is a summary of a three-year project whose ambition was to design and practically validate an innovated teaching structure. This structure respects the focus of the Experimental Design Studio while creating space for the systematic development of individual creative programs and the authentic expression of its students. It enables the transformation of a studio theme into a real-world project with the potential to become a high-quality start-up. Its timeline, smoothly distributed across the entire duration of study, provides sufficient space for serious research, refined outputs, and the systematic building of one's own design program—a brand.
It encourages the establishment of collaborations with other experts or institutions involved in the process of creating a product, product line, or service. The exhibited projects represent a diverse range of approaches—from material research, design of proprietary technology, and craft innovations to exploring the possibilities of digital technologies and activist or socially-oriented projects.
