Tangible Digitalism
My thesis, titled Tangible Digitalism, encapsulates my methodology of transforming digital approaches into physical forms. As my primary points of departure, I selected social media filters, algorithms, and the physical manipulation of technology. For each of these three segments, I created a physical object representing the given approach.
I represented social media and filters through a light-source box where transparent printed layers can be inserted. The backlit image is projected onto a person, thereby altering their appearance. In the second part, I focused on materializing the algorithm as a principle of displaying information tied to our search history. I embodied this principle through glasses with colored filters; the user’s choice of specific glasses allows them to see only within a certain color spectrum. I am also including an image designed so that each pair of glasses reveals only specific content rendered in a particular color.
The final part illustrates the physical manipulation of technology. While using devices, we perform repetitive movements that my work captures in a simple way. Since most people use a mouse when working with a computer, I created a fixture with a pen attached to the mouse that records hand movement during work. Upon completion, the resulting path is revealed.
The aim of my Bachelor’s thesis is to materialize digital elements to highlight the gravity of our actions in the virtual world. Influence, manipulation, and adaptation may not seem serious in a digital context, but once translated into the material world, we can truly feel their power.
