Losing the Grip
This work explores the intimate and ever-changing relationship between human and material, specifically clay, through the process of learning a new technology—wheel-throwing. The focus lies not only on the resulting object but, above all, on the gesture that shapes it.
A key part of the work is the conscious disruption of this relationship. By using tools that restrict hand movement, the direct physical contact with the clay is weakened, suppressing the natural rhythm of the work. This gives rise to new structures, shapes, and gestures that allow the author to reflect on the boundaries of her own control and the autonomy of the material.
The search for intersections continues through work with other materials—dough or sugar paste—which respond similarly to touch and pressure. A broader material dialogue emerges, examining how a gesture changes with the material and how, in turn, the material reshapes the human.
Through the repetition of gestures, careful observation of their subtle variations, and the perception of the material, the work becomes an exploration of presence, concentration, and physical memory. In this project, the gesture is as vital as the final form—both are traces documenting the bond between human and matter.
The project was created in collaboration with the Ceramics Studio (Secondary Studio). Expert Consultation: doc. Mgr. art. Markéta Nováková, ArtD. and Mgr. art. Karin Patúcová - Lunterová, ArtD.
