Herbag

I work with the stereotype where the handbag serves as a symbol of femininity. The handbag addresses elements of the female body and the ways in which that body interacts with its environment. It binds femininity into roles that are already predetermined.

My work builds upon this thinking, representing a silent rebellion that might go unnoticed at first glance. I introduce various ways a handbag can interact with our bodies. For instance, a concrete handbag acts as a burden in one moment... while in another, it functions as a weapon. Or a handbag as a face mask, echoing the routine grooming rituals that are part of the “female lot”.

By shifting the material and function of this everyday object, I question the expectations placed upon women and the physical weight of societal norms.
