The Chills
I perceive the body as a tool that is constantly changing, evolving, and adapting to the era and environment in which it exists. The body has undergone evolution—a process that is ongoing. We change as a society and as individuals. Some parts and functions of our bodies are no longer used as our ancestors used them; therefore, it is possible they will degrade or disappear entirely. Among these are goosebumps—an involuntary response to cold and fear that we cannot control by will.
My project follows a speculative vision of a future where our bodies lose the ability to trigger goosebumps in response to external stimuli. I have created three groups of objects that address this issue from different perspectives:
1.) Tools made of various materials that activate goosebumps through touch or sound.
2.) Ice jewelry that triggers goosebumps when applied to the neck and arms; they adapt to the body’s shape through heat before quickly melting away, leaving only a trace behind.
3.) A textile object that uses pins to evoke the evolutionary remnant of our hairy bodies, from a time when goosebumps made us appear larger and more dangerous to threats.
