The Moment After
I call it a camera, yet for me, it never was and is not one.
This camera belonged to my mother. For a long time, I believed it was broken, so I used it only to observe the world around me. During this work, however, I discovered that its original function remains intact. Yet, for me, nothing changed. It is my personal space. Will it remain so? Perhaps it is just another layer. It always sufficed to squint one eye, keep the other open, move closer, and suddenly, I was sitting inside the viewfinder.
I made only the flash and the small red light accessible, allowing me to capture night scenes. Since I decided to record the entire process this way, I filmed with my phone, which replaced my eye. I filmed intuitively, especially in moments when I wanted to enter and observe the events intimately. A few times, I let someone else in. For the first time, I saw myself too.
Belts and Music Boxes
Situations and objects from the videos influenced how everything around the viewfinder looks now. I created belts that can be gently moved by hand using a transparent roller or by winding a music box with a black cylinder. You can observe them up close with your naked eye or through the camera.
Dandelions and Their Parachutes
Tiny dandelion seeds are preserved here. You can step into the projection between the foils and blow into the gap from the container where the seeds are kept.
Subtitles
Some moments remained unrecorded for various reasons. They are hidden as short sentences within a cylinder. Pull the piece that protrudes; return it using the crank on top.
Video
Here, all recordings are gathered, from the first to the very last. Throughout the process, layering occurs: phone to lens, lens to belts, belts to foils, foils to video... then again from the beginning. And perhaps beyond.
