Start-up Summer survay 2022EN/SK
A start-up is defined as a newly emerging project, company, or other form of entrepreneurial activity. The term originated at the turn of the millennium during the rapid boom of the IT sector to describe new technological applications.
Currently, the start-up is experiencing a renaissance, long transcending the IT sector into all social spheres, including design and the creative industries. The core definition of a start-up is innovation that brings new qualities to the economic, social, cultural, ecological, or other areas of social life. It can be a service or a product.
The current situation surrounding the term 'start-up' is, at the very least, confusing. In many projects, invention is confused with mere attraction, and social benefit is minimized in favor of economic gain. It has become a symbol of individual creative freedom, where the process of self-realization itself becomes its essence, while the actual content is often secondary or even questionable.
At first glance, the phenomenon of the need for self-realization might seem positive and certainly inspiring from a design perspective. The problem arises when we realize that, at the expense of diversity across many factors, the value of the result is ultimately defined primarily by economic parameters. From this viewpoint, we can consider some start-ups to be socially insignificant or even harmful. For a designer, the challenge lies in redefining the essence of a start-up within the context of current discussions on the designer's role in society and the responsible approach to the solutions they bring.
The goal is to encourage students to think about their own futures. It enables the transformation of a studio theme into a real project with the potential to become a high-quality start-up. At the same time, by spreading the timeframe across the entire length of study, it provides sufficient space for serious research and refined outputs. It allows for the systematic building of one's own design program, brand, and collaborations with other experts who enter the process of creating a product, product line, or service.
