The Originality
One of the debated topics in contemporary design is the demand for originality, which appears paradoxical within the context of design history and current digital capabilities. According to some design theorists, creating an entirely autonomous—original—product is nearly impossible, as development shows that almost every 'new' product builds upon its predecessor. Simultaneously, with the advancement of digital technologies, we observe new concepts and approaches to creation involving the participation of multiple, even anonymous, authors based on the so-called 'open design' principle.
However, today is an era of mass individualization, and the demand for product originality places significant pressure on the designer to find ways to navigate this situation. One approach is the development of one's own authorial technology, capable of giving the product an individual hallmark. This is the goal of my Master’s project, whose ambition is not only to design an authorial technology but also to create a broader framework in which the customer can be involved as a further participant in the design and manufacturing process.
